God's NOT HOT List

"There are six things the LORD hates— no, seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family." Proverbs 6:16-19

Oftentimes we find ourselves wondering, “Well what does God want from me?” Somebody once told me that its sometimes easier to find out what something is, by finding out what its not. I may not know every single detail of what God wants of me, but here I have some examples of things that I know that he does not. Lets look closer…

The word detest is so much stronger than “hate” first off. It means to abhor something, which means to regard with extreme dislike or aversion. Which is basically saying, “I will do ANYTHING to be away from this thing.” That is a pretty powerful statement from the One who actually IS capable of anything. Including separating you enternally from His presence. I defiantly don’t want God to detest me.

 “Haughty Eyes”

Okay so “haughty eyes” is sometimes translated from a “proud look”. Haughtiness is basically being a snob, walking around like it don’t stink. Not one man or woman on this Earth is worth more than another. The man on the corner and The President are just as precious and just as worthy in God’s eyes. Our culture has taught us that race, country, accomplishments, education, appearances, power, money, respect, and fame somehow separate us into different classes. In our little ant colony lives, that may very well be, but from a God standing high above the ant pile, we are all the same. What man or woman can create their own breath? Their own sun? Who among us can defeat death and live as long as we would like? True we may delay death and help deliver life from the womb, but we are just little pieces to a much bigger puzzle! Only God is responsible for setting all our lives in motion and stopping them. A proud look at someone else is to elevate yourself into godhood. And last time I checked, I wasn’t dying on the cross for nobody, so I’ll leave that up to Him.

 “A Lying Tongue”

This is pretty obvious. God IS Truth. If what you say is not truth, than it is not of Him, and pretty much is against Him. This is something that He has specifically stated over and over again. Remember those commandments? Also, just think of the pain, unrest, confusion, and heartache that a lot of lies cause. God is not the author of confusion. (1 Corinthians 14:33). So one guess as to who is? Just to make things a bit clearer, there are two types of lies. The lie of commission is the one that we are all familiar with. This is telling a lie. “Yes I took out the trash.” “No sir, I don’t know what happened to that report” “Say bro, I aint even got it dog….”.

There is also the lie of omission. This is leaving a little bit out so that a person will believe something you know isn’t the truth. “Oh baby, we just went to the (strip) club.” “I was out the Mike and Sam (and Kim and Keisha).” This is a much more subtle lie that we try and call “protecting their feelings.” Newsflash…it’s a lie. And all lies have the same weight. There are no little white lies in His eyes anymore than there are little white murders.

 “Hands that Kill the Innocent”

This has an obvious translation, but I think it may also mean people that kill innocence. So I mean like showing your little brother how to smoke or drink, or leaving a r-rated movie with sex on when your kids are in the room. I know a child’s innocence in America is something that is very rare now, but I think that God hates this. And hates the ones that are doing it. If this is so, think about the music you listen to and what it may be doing to those around you.

“A Heart That Plots Evil”

There are people in this world that do just sit around and try to think of ways to make other peoples life worse. Or think about ways to get revenge on people. Or how to get away with doing something they shouldn’t. Or think of lies they can tell to get out of work. Or excuses they can give to not do this or that…..oh did I step on your toes. Evil is not just Devil Worship and murder. Evil is almost anything that is not of God or leading away from God. If you couldn’t do it in God’s presence, there’s a good chance it’s not of Him.

“Feet That Race to Do Wrong”

I can’t tell you how many time I rushed home, got fresh and clean, dressed to impress, sped through yellow lights, got there earlier and left late doing something that had ABSOLUTLY nothing to do with God. Wish is funny cause a lot of times, when I have something good to do, like church or bible study, or just helping somebody in need, I kinda drag around and am usually late. I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in this. “A False Witness That Pours Out Lies” So we already covered lies. This is mostly for us teachers and clergy. Why stand in the Name of Truth and lie? For our own purposes? For our own agendas? This is foolishness. And it won’t go unnoticed.

“A Person Who Sows Discord Among Family”

This is not just the golddigger or the dog that sleeps with married women. Anyone that breaks up families. I hear this ad on the radio all the time that goes “Tired of waking up to the same old face everyday? Or maybe you really like the one you woke up today? Well we can do your divorce cheaply and quickly so you can get back to enjoying your life.” Um….point made…

Again, I am still learning and what God wants from me, but this does help me, and hopefully anyone who reads this, what He doesn’t want.

Da Beast

Lord, thank you for showing a glimpse into Your mind. I thank you for your mercy, for I have done most if not all of these things several times and you have not separated yourself from me. Your love for me is much greater the your hate of these things, and so you have shown me through your own blood. I can never repay you for this kindness, but I can show my gratitude and my love through my obedience, and by living freely in the joy you’ve given me. Thank you for you presence in my life. In your saving name, Jesus Christ, amen.
